It is up to you to determine how the layout of your track looks like. Most people opt for the oval layout that has two long sides with semicircles at the ends. You can also form circles, figure eights and squares with rounded edges.

Once you are sure that it is possible to make the layout start connecting the pieces. This is done by joining the end of each piece to another. Some of the models come with metal clips that can be used to hold the track in place. It is possible to connect the modern models without any clips because they snap together. Connect the track pieces until you create the desired layout.
Make sure that the track with an electrical plug is part of the layout. There are some models that come with a power pack that can be plugged into a power source. Some of the models have two wires that have to be connected to power terminals that are part of the package. When the wires are connected to like colored terminals the power supply is established.
Take the engine and place it on the track, each of its wheels has to rest on the track. Test the train table set by plugging in the power and turning on the controls. If the set up was done in the right manner then the engine is supposed to move. If it does not move, check to see if all the track sections are connected.
