The first public documentation of a putting game with obstacles occurred in the Illustrated London News in 1912. It was appropriately named and patented as "Gofstacle", enjoying instant popularity. By 1916 the miniature golf craze had crossed the Atlantic Ocean and taken a firm hold of North Americans. The Gofstacle kits sold in pine boxes from inventor William Senhouse Clarke were brought overseas for private back-garden use, but in true American style a bigger version was soon in mass-production.

In 1916 the first standardized miniature golf courses began production in bulk, in the town of Pinehurst North Carolina. The whole eastern coast of the US became a hotbed of miniature golf activity, as tens of thousands of courses opened up. Popular Science magazine even reported more than 150 rooftop mini golf courses in New York City. The oldest stand-alone miniature golf course in the US and still in use is the Tall Maples Miniature Golf Course in Rochester New York. It has even earned a spot on the National Register of Historic Places.

With such a long history of mini golf in the south-eastern region of the US, it is only natural mini golfers take their hobby very seriously. National competitions have taken place since 1930, unfortunately the Great Depression caused the loss of thousands of courses and a break in competing all together. When economic times improved, the mini golf competitions began once again. In Binghamton, New York a new kind of course was emerging. Brothers Joseph and Robert Taylor departed from the usual banks and curves of old mini golf courses, and introduced actual obstacles including castles and wishing wells.

The Taylor brothers were often commissioned to build their successful mini golf courses, even by the military. Prefabricated courses were shipped to American military bases in Korea and Vietnam, to help morale among soldiers. Taylor-made courses sprouted up everywhere, including South Carolina. Today, one of the most complex, popular, and challenging mini golf courses in the US is Hawaiian Rumble in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

Hawaiian Rumble has a fire and lava-spewing volcano that reaches 50 feet in the air. If the volcano isn't a serious enough mini-golfing obstacle, then how about a roaring waterfall and tunnels? The curves, hills and obstacles of Hawaiian Rumble's two courses are so complex, the US ProMiniGolf Association holds their annual world championship there each year. Putting coaches and experts from around the world train their students at Hawaiian Rumble. Container candles are a beautiful way to accent your home, especially the bathroom. To make your container candles look the best, choose glassware that is sturdy and has a simple design. You can purchase this glassware for a very low price at most retail stores. You can generally find great deals at yard sales, flea markets, and thrift sales as well. Try to find glassware with lids if available.

Clean all the glass prior to using them to prevent dust or other particles from building up inside. If you have a dishwasher a quick rinse cycle will do the trick. It is not recommended to make container candles in anything other than glass containers for safety reasons.

You will need to obtain a few supplies in addition to your glassware before you can start the process of making container candles. You will need a double boiler for the wax, quality wax, dye, and fragrances if you desire to use it. It is best to get wicks with tabs for making this type of candle. For container candles, you can use either paraffin wax or bees wax. Melt the wax in the double boiler to a temperature of about 110 degrees Fahrenheit. Once it has reached that temperature, add your color and scent.

For best results, microwave the glass containers for a minute or two. This will make sure the wax doesn't leave unsightly air pockets in the container as it hardens. Place the glass containers on a cookie sheet to make clean up from any spills a snap. Fill each glass container within one inch of the top. Leaving that extra space will allow room for the candle to burn and not drip outside the container. You will need to let your container candles cool for about 20 minutes.

Gently place a wick with tab into each candle container. You will need to keep an eye on them as you will need to make sure the wick stays centered as the wax hardens. Once the candles completely cool, cut the wick to 1/2 of the top of the candle. A great way to make working with the wicks easier is to take a ball point pen apart. Place the shell of the pen around the wick and use it to guide the wick into place. As the wax hardens the wick tab with stay firmly in place. You can also clip the top of the wick with a cloths pin laid across the opening to help keep it in place.

You can add creativity to your container candles by decorating the jars with paints or gluing on colored sequences. Glitter makes a great design tool as well. For a simple yet attractive design, consider gluing a pretty colored ribbon around the top of the container.

Here's the trick. Before you do this, you'll need a fake chicken head. You get these from hobby shops, or anyplace on the Internet. While you are telling the audience of your magical voodoo powers, grab the chickens head. Naturally, they won't be watching too closely, and will most likely be ready to turn their heads in disgust should you be crazy enough to really pull off a chicken's head.

While they are getting ready to recoil in horror, you simply take the chickens head and tuck it under her wing. If you hold the chicken under your left arm, you can keep the fake chicken head in your breast pocket. People won't be looking nearly close enough to see you pull this off. Then when you tuck the chickens head under the wing, pull out the fake chicken head, and quickly thrust it in the face of a few audience members. Do this only for a couple of seconds. Then reach back, put the fake head in your breast pocket, and pull the chickens had out from under it's wing. If you want you can toss the chicken at the audience, further scaring into insanity.

After the trick is over, you can return the chicken to its owner (if you borrowed it from a member of the audience) or simply let it go, or give it to your assistant. Just act like pulling off a chickens' head and replacing it is an everyday thing for a voodoo master like yourself. Then casually go on your way as if nothing has happened.
